At the Oct. 17th ECC meeting it was agreed that the northern and southern
contingent would meet separately to discuss specifications for new locomotive purchases.
The following is a report of the southern contingent meeting.
Specifications For New Locomotive Purchases
In addition to existing cab specifications agreed upon by the committee, the following
will be specified to the manufacturer.
 | Noise / VibrationIsolated cab design |
 | Exhaust EmissionsCalifornia Standard |
 | Inside PaintTan color, flat finish |
 | Air HornLocated behind exhaust |
 | Emergency Air Horn Button on conductor's side |
(Note that the enginemen are against providing this option, they feel the conductor
will play with it). The UTU feels this is an important safety feature, it would reduce the
delay in warning people on the track in the instance that the conductor notices something
before the engineman.
 | Separate Train Length counter to be included on conductor's speedometer |
(Note that enginemen do not want to lose the existing train length counter they have in
addition to the CDU train length counter, the argument is that they need one in the event
of non-CCO operation). The UTU argues that, in the event of non-CCO operation, there will
be a crew member on the caboose to identify when a train has passed a certain point.
 | Possible installation of electronic bell to reduce impulse noise in cab |
 | Numbers stenciled in cab interior |
 | G. Younger to forward to L. Lawrence, Corporate Safety contacts for manufacturer to
determine specifications regarding ergonomic design (Apparently, CP Rail has a staff
ergonomist based in Calgary, Shona Anderson, who is involved in their cab design, perhaps
she could be a helpful resource). |
 | AAR-style control stand |
 | Separate heating controls for engineman and conductor, heating to be extended into
footwells |
 | Air Circulation Fans (2), separate controls |
 | Single-post front windows, teardrop style, sloped front hood |
 | Tinted plastic sun visors |
 | 3rd door to outside |
 | Digital Speedometer |
 | Toggle-style sanding switch with flashing warning light |
 | Adequate baggage storage |
 | All lighting equipped with rheostat dimmers |
 | Desk / lighting arrangement subject to ergonomic assessment and approval by UTU and
Corporate Safety (It may be that our desk arrangement is superior to manufacturer's). |
 | Window wipersElectric, silent operation |
 | Adjustable footrests |
 | Control of outside air leakage into control stand and washroom |
 | Steps and walkways open grid type to prevent accumulation of snow and oil |
 | Music-capable headset system G. Younger indicated that money proposed for supplying
headset system to the locomotive fleet has not survived budget approval because a business
case could not be made. The UTU feels that if we are ever going to progress this issue it
must start somewhere. New equipment must be purchased for these locomotives, can it be
music capable with headphone jacks? G. Younger to progress with L. Behnish. |
